# Ruby 1.0

> Ruby's first public 1.0 release, delivered on Christmas Day.

- December 25, 1996: Ruby 1.0 released

Ruby reached its first public **1.0** release on **December 25, 1996** (build 1.0-961225), a few years after [Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto](https://chunkybacon.dev/people/matz.md) settled on the name and started building the language ([Ruby was named before it existed](https://chunkybacon.dev/stories/named-before-it-existed.md)). It was Ruby's very first Christmas-Day ship, the seed of what later grew into [The Christmas-release tradition](https://chunkybacon.dev/stories/the-christmas-release-tradition.md).
